US durables rise but weakness remains

New orders for durable goods rose unexpectedly in September, but still pointed to weakness in the manufacturing sector, a commerce department report indicated on Wednesday.

Seasonally adjusted durable goods orders rose by 0.8 per cent last month, much better than the 1.1 per cent drop expected by economists, and led by a jump in orders for aircraft.
