US banking casts shadow over European shares

European shares this week fell to their lowest level since early 2003, as some better-than-expected corporate earnings were overshadowed by dismal economic data and the continuing travails of the US banking sector.

Several major European stock indices slid through levels not breached since the last days of the post-dotcom bear market.
