Gordon Brown’s claim to have saved “at least 500,000” jobs since the credit crunch has been undermined by Treasury figures which suggest that the real figure could be as little as half that.

Guidance from Treasury officials in April suggested that ministers could claim to have supported “between 250,000 and 450,000 jobs” although there was “huge uncertainty” surrounding this range.
