Sonia Gandhi, Congress party leader, is discovering that renunciation and resignation are currencies with very different values.

Commentators said she had suffered a severe blow to her prestige as a result of her forced resignation on Thursday from both parliament and her controversial extra-constitutional role as chairman of a specially-created National Advisory Council.
