New S Africa police commissioner appointed

President Jacob Zuma on Wednesday appointed a new national police commissioner with the task of getting to grips with South Africa’s endemic crime problems.

Bheki Cele, formerly responsible for transport and security in Mr Zuma’s home province of KwaZulu Natal, said that he would be tough “because you’re dealing with tough guys. You can’t be soft and you can’t be moving around kissing crime.”
