Sure hand on modern Europe’s tiller

Eleven men have been European Commission president since 1958 but few can have relished the job as much as José Manuel Barroso of Portugal.

Speaking to the Financial Times in his 13th-floor office in Brussels, Mr Barroso puts it simply. “I’m enjoying what I’m doing. I think it’s a privilege. I’m a very committed European.”
