India's abundant natural wonders, grand monuments and ancient history are inseparable from its vigorous modern culture. Such assets ought to attract millions of tourists. Yet the country last year greeted only 3.3m visitors.
One of India's problems has been the poor quality of services that many tourists receive once they arrive. Inexpert tour guides, unsafe and unsanitary taxis and overzealous touts have often combined to bamboozle even experienced travellers.
