Summer sales spark strong rise in spending

Christmas came early at the shops in July as retailers drew in customers with festive season-style sales, despite the month’s heavy rains.

Total sales rose by 3.6 per cent in July compared with a year earlier, after increasing by 3.2 per cent in June, said the British Retail Consortium.
