Few people agree on exactly when Ségolène Royal metamorphosed from just another peripheral Socialist politician into a serious contender to become the first woman president of France after winning her party’s primary.

Was it, as some argue, after her victory in the regional elections of 2004 to become president of Poitou-Charentes, a rural area of western France, which she has since turned into her fiefdom?
