The ability to run up losses at an alarming rate from relatively small market movements, and even being called on to put up extra cash when a trade turns sour, make spread betting quite risky enough in the eyes of many investors.

But on top of the gearing risks in this form of margin trading, spread betters should also consider the broader safety of their money with firms.
