By Gordon Brown’s recent standards it was a successful day at the office. Only one minister resigned and publicly denounced him as a bully; only a handful of Labour MPs called for him to quit.

Even Labour’s pitiful 15 per cent share of the national vote in the European elections was not enough to rekindle the rebellion that threatened to overwhelm him last week. “The only way is up,” said one relieved loyalist MP.
