ExxonMobil, the oil company, has come under increasing pressure to meet its leading shareholders to talk about climate change, and may agree to do so for the first time this year. The campaign on Exxon has been spearheaded by Ceres, a coalition of investors and environmental groups that has campaigned for large companies to show more environmental concern since the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989.
Ceres argues that investors’ interests are poorly served when companies fail to report on environmental and social issues, which are often seen as not core to a company’s economic performance. It campaigns for greater transparency among companies with regard to their environmental performance
