French president Nicolas Sarkozy on Wednesday called for “an ever closer association of French and German policies”, describing the reconciliation of the two countries as a “treasure”.

Mr Sarkozy was speaking at a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris alongside Angela Merkel, who became the first German chancellor to attend a French commemoration of armistice day – the end of the first world war.
