The banking industry worldwide has been going through the perfect storm since the credit crunch started in the summer of 2007.

The collapse of high-profile banks and nationalisation of others as well as the hundreds of billions of dollars of writedowns on structured credit products were all signs that the system had gone terribly wrong.
