Hungary coalition heads for victory

Hungary's ruling socialist-liberal coalition yesterday looked within striking distance of retaining power, a day after forging a narrow lead in Sunday's first round of parliamentary elections. A second round will be held on April 23.

The Socialists took 43 per cent of the vote, the conservative Fidesz party, 42 per cent. The liberal Free Democrats, the Socialists' junior coalition partner, took 6.5 per cent.
