DoJ to investigate Mittal bid for Arcelor

The US Justice Department has begun an antitrust investigation of Mittal Steel's $23bn hostile bid for Arcelor, creating a potential regulatory hurdle for a proposed deal that is already facing political opposition in Europe.

A DoJ official confirmed yesterday that a review of the deal, which would combine the world's two largest steelmakers, had been initiated, but declined to provide further detail on its scope or timing.
