Schäuble tipped as German finance minister

Wolfgang Schäuble has emerged as favourite to be Germany’s next finance minister, placing the veteran conservative at the centre of a new coalition government that will juggle a strained budget with delivering tax cuts.

Mr Schäuble’s experience and tough reputation bodes well for steering tax reform through parliament, where the fiscal discipline of chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats could clash with the tax-cutting ambitions of their Free Democrat partners.
