UK car sales rise for first time in 15 months

Sales of new cars rose for the first time in 15 months in July as the government’s “cash-for-bangers” scheme coaxed more buyers back into dealerships.

The head of a lobby group representing dealers called for scrapping incentives to be extended when the scheme’s funding ends, arguing that the £300m programme was earning government as much in tax receipts as it cost.
