The UK foreign secretary, William Hague, and Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, warned on Friday that signs of accelerating reform in Myanmar should not be taken as a signal for countries to ease pressure on the government.
Appearing side by side on the terrace of Ms Suu Kyi’s lakeside home in the former capital, Yangon, the two issued similar calls for the government to release all remaining political prisoners, resolve long-running ethnic conflicts, allow humanitarian access to battle-torn areas and ensure the forthcoming April by-elections are free and fair.
