S&P upgrades Japan’s debt rating to AA

Japan’s sovereign debt rating was on Monday raised to “AA “ by Standard and Poor’s in the first upgrade since 1975 by the ratings agency which cited government efforts to cut spending and normalise monetary policy.

The one-notch upgrade, from AA-minus, is a symbolic moment for Japan, which was humiliated when ratings agencies began to aggressively downgrade its sovereign debt rating in 2000.
