Brown cranks up rhetoric on City pay

Gordon Brown on Thursday cranked up the rhetoric against “irresponsible” behaviour in the City, as he started a campaign to persuade a sceptical public that his £400bn bank rescue plan was in the national interest.

The prime minister’s team are worried that while the bail-out was given a generally warm reception among London’s financial, political and media elite, there has been a much more hostile reaction in the country at large.
