Castro ‘overture’ boosts hopes of US ties

The US and Cuba moved closer to a historic reconciliation on Friday as the Obama administration reacted positively to what it called an “overture” by Raúl Castro, the Cuban president.

The flurry of diplomatic moves, involving the rare spectacle of Cuban and US officials responding warmly to each other, came as a continent-wide summit began in Trinidad and Tobago.
