Poland's iconic shipyard fights EU cutback

Poland's Gdansk shipyard, cradle of the Solidarity union that helped bring down communism, is fighting European Commission demands to slash capacity to compensate for past aid.

The shipyard yesterday sent the Commission a report spelling out its planned route back to viability, a plan that does not agree with the commission's determination that it shut down two-thirds of its production capacity.
