Call for VAT rethink on City temporary staff

City job losses could be exacerbated by the withdrawal of a tax concession for temporary workers, the insurance industry warned on Tuesday.

The Association of British Insurers urged the Treasury to reconsider plans to charge value added tax on the wages of temporary staff, which would have a detrimental effect on businesses that are “exposed to severe economic difficulties”.
