The problem of digital exclusion is by no means confined to the developing world. Even in the richest countries, communities are missing out on the social and economic benefits that online access can bring.
The US, for example, ranked only 15th in the world in terms of per capita broadband penetration, according to 2008 figures from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, meaning it lags well behind countries such as Denmark, South Korea and Canada.
