Mubarak vows to name vice-president

President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt will name a vice-president after the September presidential election, a move he has strongly resisted throughout his 24-year rule.

The appointment, confirmed by Soliman Awad, the presidential spokesman, could provide a crucial indication of Mr Mubarak’s plans for the succession as he prepares for what will probably be his last term in office.
