Five years ago, the world’s 12 most valuable banks by market capitalisation were, in order: Citibank; Bank of America; HSBC; JP Morgan Chase; Wells Fargo; Royal Bank of Scotland; UBS; Barclays; Wachovia; BNP Paribas; Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ; and US Bancorp.
Six were American; three were (at least notionally) British; one was Swiss; one was Japanese; and one was French.
