Greece vows action to cut budget deficit

Greece on Tuesday promised forceful action to cut its budget deficit and improve the quality of its official statistics after its European allies voiced unusually strong criticism of the nation’s management of its public finances.

George Papaconstantinou, finance minister in Greece’s new socialist government, disclosed that the nation’s deficit would soar this year to almost 12.5 per cent of gross domestic product, far higher than estimates provided by the former conservative government.
