US Senate opens debate on climate change

The Senate’s environment and public works committee will on Tuesday start hearings on a climate change bill, although it is unlikely that any legislation could be enacted before the Copenhagen summit in December.

The draft bill, put forward by Barbara Boxer of California, chair of the committee, and John Kerry of Massachusetts, who heads the Senate foreign relations committee, aims to cut US emissions by 20 per cent by 2020.
