Detroit presents lean face to Washington

Detroit’s three embattled carmakers will seek to persuade US lawmakers this week that they have a viable future as smaller, leaner companies building eye-catching and fuel-efficient vehicles.

General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler are due to submit blueprints to Congress on Tuesday in a renewed bid to secure $25bn in emergency funding to prevent them from running out of cash.
