Exchange traded funds are currently only a small part of the US mutual fund industry but the economic downturn has shown they are a force to be reckoned with.

For the most recent quarter, ETFs suffered the same dismal drop in assets as most mutual funds, losing 16 per cent of their assets under management and falling to $485bn.
