EU asked not to abandon Balkans enlargement

Former heads of state and government will call today on the European Union's present leaders not to give up on enlargement plans, or risk a return to ethnic tensions and violence in the heart of the continent.

In a letter to arrive before this week's Brussels summit, the elder statesmen ask the EU to keep open the prospect of membership for the troubled states of Albania and the former Yugoslavia.
