Scepticism over EU tax plans for Asia

Private bankers in Singapore and Hong Kong have expressed scepticism over whether the European Union will succeed in persuading the two Asian financial centres to co-operate in tracking down suspected tax evaders.

European tax officials on Monday held their first discussions on a proposal to extend to Asia the EU savings directive, which requires countries to subject offshore savings held by EU citizens to withholding taxes.
