Moody’s warns about building society losses

Some of the UK’s 55 building societies could declare losses for 2008 as they face pressure on rising impairments from UK mortgage lending and commercial property, according to a new report by Moody’s, the rating agency.

Moody’s main concern about UK mortgage lenders, including building societies, was the amount of capital needed to absorb losses – especially those coming from specialist mortgage lending and commercial property loans.
