Contingency fund helps NHS head for surplus

The National Health Service in England is heading for a small financial surplus this year but only after including a £350m contingency fund, according to the latest returns from health bodies.

The forecast surplus of £18m, based on figures for the first quarter of 2006-07, will be achieved largely because strategic health authorities have set aside £350m as a contingency.
