S&N quarterly profits rise to $173m

The medical device market is beginning to stabilise, Smith & Nephew said on Friday, amid signs of a pick-up in US volumes in the third quarter. However, the group said it was still facing pricing pressures, and sluggish sales of its joint replacements targeted at younger people.

Shares in Smith & Nephew were 0.9 per cent, or 5p, lower at 535p in mid-morning trade.
