One of Britain’s most important collections of historic coins has been stolen in what a leading expert on Monday described as a “total disaster” for academic research into the field.

Police on Monday appealed for help to track down thieves who stole about 1,000 coins, along with other items, from the home of Lord Stewartby in the Borders last month.
