Right to strike not protected, argues Britain

Striking is not a fundamental and overriding right protected by European Community law, the government is arguing in a legal case due to be heard by Europe's top court next month.

The so-called Viking Line case pits workers' rights under EU law against the freedom of employers to establish businesses where they want. The case has prompted interventions from more than a dozen European governments.
