Thousands of homosexual and lesbian couples are expected to head to register offices today as a landmark law comes into force allowing for the legal recognition of same-sex relationships.
The Civil Partnerships Act will allow same-sex couples the right for the first time to make a formal commitment to each other through a statutory civil registration procedure. From today, same-sex couples will be able to register their intent to become civil partners, paving the way for the first ceremonies in several weeks.
