An Egyptian official who has been accused of anti-semitism by leading Jewish intellectuals has emerged as the front-runner in the race for the leadership of Unesco, the United Nations culture and learning arm.
Farouk Hosny, Egypt’s culture minister for two decades, secured on Thursday 22 out of the 58 votes of members of the organisation’s executive board in secret balloting at Unesco’s Paris headquarters, according to Egyptian sources.
