Pakistan unleashed helicopter gunships and artillery to kill scores of Taliban fighters, officials said on Thursday after opening a second front against militants near their stronghold in the Waziri­stan tribal region.

This came as the US House of Representatives on Thursday approved the tripling of aid to Pakistan to about $1.5bn a year for each of the next five years. The funding includes money for Pakistani schools, the judicial system, parliament and law enforcement agencies, Reuters reported.
