US ‘can avoid a trade war with the Chinese'

A senior US trade official yesterday dismissed concerns that the dispute between Beijing and Washington over textiles and intellectual property rights would escalate into a trade war, after US and Chinese officials failed to make any progress in talks on the issues last week.

James Leonard, deputy assistant secretary for textiles, apparel and consumer goods at the commerce department, expressed confidence that the row would be resolved.
