The Conservatives should not expect a “miracle on day one” if David Cameron wins the party leadership, the shadow chancellor George Osborne said on Friday, preparing MPs for a “long hard slog” back to power.

In an interview with the FT, Mr Osborne, Mr Cameron’s friend and campaign manager, sets out to lower expectations ahead of next week’s announcement of the outcome of the leadership contest.
