Israel to release prisoners before summit

Israel is to free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and begin a staged withdrawal from West Bank towns as part of measures approved yesterday by senior ministers ahead of next week's Sharm el-Sheikh summit.

Ariel Sharon, Israeli prime minister, and Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian Authority president, will meet at the Egyptian resort on Tuesday at a summit hosted by President Hosni Mubarak. King Abdullah of Jordan has also been invited.
