Spotlight: Hollywood writers: Picket line deviates from script

In any normal year, Hollywood would be dominated at this time by coverage of the Golden Globes, which, after the Oscars, is the US film industry’s most important awards ceremony.

But the Globes has become the latest casualty of the strike by film and television writers, now in its third month. The awards ceremony was cancelled and replaced by a scaled-back press conference because members of the main actors’ union, the Screen Actors Guild, support the writers and refused to cross the picket line.
