Royal Mail hires temporary staff

Royal Mail is recruiting hundreds of temporary staff at special sorting centres in an effort to keep services going in the face of national strikes threatened by 121,000 postal workers.

The move comes as online retailers and other businesses step up plans to switch to alternative delivery services if strikes by the Communication Workers Union go ahead. These could start by the end of the month if talks fail to resolve the dispute, which revolves around changes to working conditions.
