Quake charity bypasses politics

As help flowed into China’s earthquake-devastated Sichuan province last week, one of the first aid groups to arrive was Tzu Chi, a Buddhist charity from Taiwan.

Tzu Chi was replicating a pattern that over the past decade has earned it a growing reputation among the global disaster relief community as a rapid responder to tragedies such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
