Lula faces lame-duck presidency in Brazil crisis

The leftwing Workers' party of President Luiz InácioLula da Silva was supposed to be celebrating in grand style this year both its 25th anniversary and its third year governing Brazil, Latin America's largest country.

Instead the PT and Mr Lula da Silva separately spent the weekend in emergency meetings to deal with a corruption scandal that triggered the worst political crisis since they came to power in January 2003.
