Wall St stocks return to negative territory

Wall Street endured one of its most volatile weeks in recent memory, and closed out the period having just escaped a brief encounter with a bear market.

Although the broad benchmarks closed in negative territory on Friday, the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average managed to record their first weekly gain in 2008, and break a string of four weekly declines.
