Environment: ‘Smokescreen’ hangs in air

When hundreds of climate change campaigners gathered at London’s Heathrow airport this summer, the small amount of disruption they caused was barely distinguishable to passengers from the standard hassles of using Heathrow in the summer.

But the presence of the protesters made it clear that the aviation industry is the new favourite focus for the ire of environmental groups. Greenhouse gas emissions from airlines are the fastest growing source of emissions in Europe.
